Winter Project

It turns out that is very boring in a house by oneself. It has only been a couple days and I have already done most of the chores, watched all my shows, and gone to the library. The one thing left to do is organize my stuff so that I am ready for this next semester but I don't want to waste money on more shelving so I have decided to finally make a cardboard shelf since we have so many boxes from moving in and mail that everyone gets. I did some research but I don't think I am going to get this fancy. I am going to go for something more fun and boxlike. So here is the research and I'll try to remember to post my finished unit so it can be compared....

Finish Line

This will be the last week for the Fall 2010 semester, finally! I mean the semester was great and I learned a tons but it was also filled with stress and anxiety so I'm glad that it's ending. All I have left to do is study and take two finals (math and american history), finish my inflatable hippo, my surface design project, and all my stuff for papermaking. No big deal, right? So this week is going to be a bit busy but next week will be relaxing in comparison even though I still have to work, take people to the airport, and go to court. I still need to christmas shop for the family, hopefully I find some time for that.

So I thought maybe I would finally post some pics. These are from my surprise Thanksgiving visit to Indianna with my roomie Emma. We left tuesday night to my family's house, stayed the night and went to my ortho appt and then had lunch with my parents before setting off to Indianna.

We arrived in Indianna around 9ish at night to surprise Emma's parents first. Her dad opened the door and yelled at Emma's mom that she'll never guess who's here. Em's mom was is total shock. All she kept saying over and over that night was "I can't believe your here" and she kept staring at Em. It was pretty funny. The next day we had breakfast with Ms. Sue, took a tour of Sharpsville, Kokomo, etc, and then headed out to where Emma really wanted to be, Chris's house. We parked down the road at a cemetary and then walked to his house so that he wouldn't hear the car. We knocked on the door and Shelly, his mom, answered the door. When Chris came to the door he was probably in more shick than Em's mom was. All he could get out was "How did you get here?". It would have been funny except for the fact that I was still outside in the freezing cold wind while Em hugged him in the doorway. I had to slightly push the couple forward so I could get into the warm house :) It took Chris a while to get used to seeing me in person. He had trouble speaking to me directly for the first few hours. At one point he was trying to tell me something but was doing it through telling Emma even though I was right there and his mom asked him if he was okay, all he could tell her was that I wasn't real cause he has only seen me on the screen. hahahahahaha! We had Thanksgiving Dinner with Chris's family, I worked on my Hippo a bit that day, and we played games that night. The next day we didn't get up and going till 9 even though it was Black Friday, and you know I didn't mind. That was probably one of the first black fridays in years that I have gotten to sleep past 4am. So we went shopping, ate some chinese, had some ice cream, on Abraham's request, and then went back to Chris's to relax, help Emma with one of her photo projects, and play games again. That night we went out to Steak and Shake to hang out with Emma's friend Anna.  Saturday Chris had to work so we got to sleep in, relax, pack our stuff, and wait for him to get home. Once he got back we watched some tv and then had to say our goodbyes. That night we went out to dinner with Emma's parents and stayed the night at their house. Sunday we traveled back to Memphis lazily. It was fun to see Emma's home and her family and friends. The trip was a blast and involved alot of running around and doing nothing(which I love). I hardly ever get to just sit, do nothing, and not stress over what I should be doing for school.

Artist: Sung Yeonju from Seoul, South Korea

Sung Yeonju was born in Korea in 1986 and graduated from the Hong Ik University in 2010. This work is from the series, Wearable Foods, in which she makes garments out of food and photographs them. As a fine artist, she fell in love with photography as a main tool and a medium to create her visions. ‘Wearable Foods’ is the first long term project she started two years ago and it still continues to this day. This series of her work forces viewers to defy the actual meaning, the functionalities, and the aspects of what clothing signifies in our lives. The essence of clothing and food has been reinterpreted. Each element does not fulfill its own role and yet, each suggests an unconventional and even contradicting role – un-wearable clothing that is made out of the materials that do not last. This work will be shown for the first time in the U.S. this January at a gallery in Los Angeles. Yeonju is represented by Art-Merge.

Check out this sofa!

I would probably still lose things but I wouldn't have to dig as far to find them this way :)
Sadly this chair is one of a kind designed by Daisuke Motogi Architecture of Tokyo, Japan, "Lost in Sofa" is made of upholstered cubes that naturally form slots. Maybe one day something similiar will be on the market.

Inflatable Sculptures!

Tom assigned inflatable sculptures as our next assignment. We have been taping bags together for about a week now, trying to figure out how it all works. Tom said we can make them however we like, he supplied us with garbage bags, tarps, tape, and scissors. We can also make them as big as we like! Anyone who knows me knows I like to make everything bigger than life. So I've been working on making a hippo. At first I just tried to guess at it and then went out and bought a stuffed hippo. I figured I could look to it for pattern inspiration. After a few classes of taping shit together  trying to figure it out on my own I finally stopped playing around and did some research. Not that my stuff wans't working. It would blow up and all but there were some issues, such as tape coming off and the piece bursting from too much air pressure.
I found some useful information...First of all I need to take apart my stuffed hippo so I can truly see how it was put together. Then I need to use graph paper to trace the pattern on. The graph paper will help me figure out proportions when I blow the pattern up to, hopefully, lifesize. I think I'm going to do some research and see exactly how big a hippo is. I would love to make the piece big enough to walk into. I also learned that I can iron my seams together instead of taping them so goodbye sticky mess! I need to make slits in the piece and then reinforce them with tape to allow the pressure to not build up so much that it bursts my piece. I also found that there are a number of artist out there who work with inflatable sculptures, so they aren't just used as bounce houses.

JOSHUA ALLEN HARRIS- inflates his pieces using the city grates.

Much Needed Update

So life has been sort of hectic lately and I haven't really had time to post anything... for instance right now I need to be studying for my american history test that's at 6, especially since I don't really listen in the class. Hopefully I can bullshit my way through it. That class is just so boring. I've heard the lecture so many times, since like 2nd grade, that it just isn't interesting anymore. I think only like 2 out of the 15 kids pay attention. Quite a few actually sleep through it. I pay attention off and on but I have found that it is a really good class for getting my thoughts for other classes out on paper. For some reason it helps my thinking process to have my teacher yammering on about battles in the background.
Oh so the whole point of the update was to share my schedule for next semester! Yes indeed we finally got them today. At first my schedule consisted of a Photo 2 class and no sculpture or ceremics classes. Please, tell me how it makes sense to put a sculpture major in a photo 2 class instead of a sculpture 2 class.  Our registrar is ridiculous. To make things better my roommate, Emma, is a photo major and was put into a sculpture 1 class. hahahahaha! This school I swear. When I was talking to the registrar about my schedule she said the only thing she could do for me was to switch me from photo 2 to either painting 1 or drawing comp. Um no thanks to either. She only left me with one choice...I went and had a chat with Tom Lee, the sculpture teacher/my advisor. After laughing hysterically about me taking a photo 2 class he went and chatted to the registrar. He told her he is fine with allowing 5 more sculpture majors into his sculpture 2 class. I was number 3 on the waiting list so of course I got in! Take that registrar!! So my finally schedule as of this moment (I'm on the waiting list for my favorite art history teacher's American Art class) is...

Monday: none

Tuesday:      Literature Survey        10:40-12:05
                    Book Arts 1                 1:00-3:35
                    Art & Design:1950's    4:20-5:45

Wednesday: Sculpture 1                   9:00-3:35

Thursday: same as tuesday

Friday:         Metalsmithing              9:00-3:35

ohs and here is an update on my new pet pacman frog, Oliver Khiem...

Oli eats mostly worms. Hates the calcium powder that I put on his food once a week and so far has refused to eat anything with it. I placed tiny grasshoppers in Oli's tank yesterday but I'm not sure if they are being eaten. I put in 5 and I saw 2 this morning but I haven't really looked around for them all yet. Oli is probably about 1 inch in diameter right now. Oliver chilled in his leaf water bowl for the first time yesterday. Everyone in the house was excited and proud of him. Today Oli is back to sitting beside it though. No croaking has been heard from Oli. Really quite and laid back. Loves to dig in the dirt and hide during the day. Hops only when it can't be avoided.  I want to get one of the nocturnal lightbulbs so I can really watch Oli at night but can't afford the $17 right now.

Using any media to create pictures...

Going from the everyday "wash me" written in the filth on your car to masterpieces that will wash off in the next rain....
